What is an IP lookup?

An IP lookup turns a public IPv4 or IPv6 address into readable network information. Instead of treating the address as an isolated string, the lookup can add approximate geographic context, identify the network and Autonomous System announcing the address, show registration data, resolve reverse DNS and surface available privacy or security classifications.

The useful part is not any single field. A city result becomes more meaningful when you can also see the ISP or network operator, ASN, connection type and registration information. Those fields help explain whether an address appears to belong to a residential provider, mobile carrier, cloud platform, hosting network, VPN endpoint or another kind of infrastructure.

What can an IP address reveal?

Public IP data can usually reveal the network that carries the connection and an approximate geographic area associated with that network. Depending on the data source, you may also see an ASN, organization, country, region, city estimate, PTR hostname and reputation or anonymity signals.

It normally cannot reveal a person's exact street address, name or GPS position. Shared networks, carrier-grade NAT, dynamic addressing, VPNs and corporate gateways also mean that one public IP should not automatically be treated as one individual.

IP geolocation is not GPS

A city returned by an IP database can represent ISP routing infrastructure, a mobile gateway, datacenter or an estimated location assigned to the network range. The result is useful for context, fraud analysis, troubleshooting and traffic analysis, but it should not be presented as a precise physical location.

Why compare location sources?

Different IP geolocation providers can legitimately disagree because they use different data, update schedules and inference methods. When advanced intelligence is available, the main report compares two sources and exposes whether country, region and city values agree.

Our Location Agreement indicator measures provider consistency. It is not a probability that the device is physically at the displayed coordinates. A disagreement is valuable because it tells you where to be cautious rather than hiding uncertainty behind one answer.

Privacy-first lookup design

The ordinary geolocation lookup is requested from the visitor's browser, with a same-domain fallback if the browser cannot reach the provider. Advanced intelligence is processed transiently through a same-domain PHP endpoint so a private API credential never appears in page source. How to interpret an IP lookup responsibly.

The most useful IP reports combine multiple signals and keep their limitations visible.

Can an IP lookup find an exact home address?

No ordinary public IP geolocation database should be treated as a source of an exact residential address. It identifies network and approximate geographic information, not private subscriber records.

Why can two IP databases show different cities?

Providers use different data sources and update cycles. ISP routing, mobile gateways, VPNs, hosting infrastructure and reassigned ranges can all make city-level estimates differ.

Does one public IP always belong to one person?

No. Homes, offices, mobile carriers, public Wi-Fi networks and carrier-grade NAT can place many users or devices behind one public address.

Can an IP lookup tell whether an address is a VPN or proxy?

Security-intelligence providers can classify known VPN, proxy, Tor and hosting infrastructure, but those classifications are probabilistic and can change as networks rotate addresses.

What should I check after an IP lookup?

For deeper context, review RDAP/WHOIS registration, reverse DNS, ASN information and reputation signals. Each answers a different question about the same address.
