Example: why city-level IP location needs context

An address may be associated with Germany → Hesse → Frankfurt while the person using the connection is somewhere else in the region. The displayed city can correspond to ISP routing, a mobile gateway, a datacenter or a database estimate rather than the device itself.

What does an IP location lookup show?

An IP location lookup associates a public IP address with geographic and network metadata. Typical results include country, region, city estimate, coordinates, ASN and network organization. The network fields are important because they help explain whether the address belongs to a residential ISP, mobile carrier, cloud platform or hosting provider.

Coordinates should be read as an approximate database location. They are useful for maps, regional analysis and troubleshooting, but they are not equivalent to coordinates obtained from GPS, Wi-Fi positioning or a device location permission.

How accurate is IP geolocation?

There is no honest universal accuracy percentage for every address. Accuracy varies by country, ISP, network type and provider. Country-level data is often more stable than city-level data, while mobile, VPN and hosting networks can be particularly difficult to place precisely.

If two independent providers return the same country and region, that consistency can increase confidence in the broad result. If they disagree on the city, the correct interpretation is uncertainty—not that one provider must necessarily be correct.

Why can an IP show the wrong city?

ISPs route traffic through regional infrastructure, mobile carriers centralize traffic through gateways, and address ranges can be reassigned without every geolocation database updating immediately. VPNs and proxies intentionally change the public endpoint seen by websites. Any of these can make the shown city different from the user's physical location.

Can an IP lookup reveal an exact address?

No ordinary public IP geolocation service should be treated as a source of an exact street address. Public registration and geolocation data describe internet resources and network associations. Private subscriber information held by an ISP is a different category of data.

How should you use the result?

Use IP location as one piece of context. For a fuller picture, combine it with ASN information, RDAP registration, reverse DNS and available reputation signals. If you are investigating your own connection, compare the result with and without a VPN or across different networks to see how the public endpoint changes.
