What an IP lookup can reveal
A public lookup can return an estimated country, region or city, plus ASN, ISP or organization information. Security providers may also classify the address as residential, hosting, VPN, proxy or Tor.
What it cannot normally reveal
An ordinary IP lookup does not expose a subscriber's private ISP account record, exact home address, name or GPS location. Those are different data sources with different access controls.
Shared and changing addresses matter
Home routers let many devices share a public IP. Mobile carriers can share public IPs across many subscribers. Dynamic addressing can also assign the same address to different customers at different times. An IP should therefore not be treated as a permanent person identifier.
Why city-level results look precise
Coordinates can create a false sense of precision. They are often a representative point associated with a network/database record. Several decimal places do not mean the underlying inference is accurate to meters.
A better way to read the result
- Country = approximate jurisdiction/network context.
- City = database estimate; verify before relying on it.
- ISP/ASN = network operator context.
- VPN/proxy/Tor = classification, not identity.
- Coordinates = database point, not a GPS fix.
What level of location is realistic?
For many addresses, the most defensible interpretation is a country or broad region together with the network operator. A city can be useful as a clue, but it may correspond to ISP infrastructure or a service area rather than the device. The more precise the claim becomes, the more cautious you should be.
What should you verify before trusting the location?
Check the ASN and organization, compare more than one geolocation source when possible, and ask whether the address belongs to mobile, hosting, VPN or proxy infrastructure. Those network types are common reasons for a city estimate to differ from a user's real location.
