Your IP location is an estimate

When a lookup shows a city, that does not mean the address contains that city or that the provider measured your device there. The location is an estimate attached to a network range in a database.

ISP routing can point somewhere else

Residential providers can route traffic through aggregation points or gateways in another city. A geolocation provider may associate the public address range with that network location. You can therefore be in one town while the lookup consistently shows a nearby metropolitan area.

Mobile networks make city mapping harder

Mobile carriers can centralize internet gateways across large areas. Many subscribers may appear to the internet through infrastructure far from their handset. Carrier-grade NAT also allows many users to share public addresses.

VPNs, proxies and Tor deliberately change the visible network

If a VPN is active, websites generally see the VPN exit IP. A lookup will describe the exit server network, which may be in another city or country. The same principle applies to many proxies and Tor exit relays.

Databases can be stale or simply disagree

IP ranges are transferred, reassigned and rerouted. Providers update on different schedules. If one source says Frankfurt and another says Darmstadt, the disagreement itself is useful: city-level confidence should be lower.

What to do when the result is wrong

  • Check whether a VPN or proxy is active.
  • Compare multiple providers instead of trusting one city.
  • Check the ASN/ISP to confirm the network is yours.
  • Try again after your public IP changes.
  • Do not interpret an incorrect city as evidence that your connection is compromised.

How to tell whether the result is actually “wrong”

If the country and ISP are correct but the city differs, the database may be accurately describing the network while using a city associated with routing infrastructure. A location result can therefore be technically plausible without matching where you are sitting.

When to suspect stale data

If the country, network or region appears unrelated to the actual provider, the address range may have been transferred or reassigned more recently than the database update. Comparing providers and checking RDAP can help separate registration changes from geolocation estimates.
