What is a proxy?
A proxy relays application traffic between a client and a destination. Depending on the proxy type and configuration, the destination may see the proxy server's public IP instead of the original connection's public IP.
What does proxy detection mean?
Proxy detection services classify addresses using known infrastructure, observed behavior and network characteristics. A positive result means the provider has evidence that the address is associated with proxy activity. It does not identify the person using that address or guarantee that every connection through the IP is proxied.
Why proxy classifications can change
Datacenter proxies rotate, residential proxy networks move traffic through consumer connections, and addresses are reassigned. Intelligence providers update at different times, so a newly deployed endpoint may not be detected immediately and an old classification can sometimes outlive the behavior that created it.
Proxy versus VPN
A browser or application proxy may affect only specifically configured traffic, while a device-level VPN commonly routes a broader set of network connections through a tunnel. Both can change the public IP visible to a website, but their privacy, encryption and routing behavior are not identical.
How to interpret a positive proxy result
Use the classification as context. In security analysis, combine it with ASN, hosting type, authentication behavior, timestamps and application signals. In privacy testing, compare your public IP before and after enabling the proxy to confirm that the route actually changed.
