What does a Tor check do?
A Tor check asks whether an IP address is classified as infrastructure associated with the Tor network. For normal web traffic through Tor, the destination website usually sees the public IP of an exit relay rather than the user's original internet connection.
What a positive Tor result means
A positive result indicates that the intelligence source associates the IP with Tor infrastructure. It is a statement about the network endpoint, not the identity, intent or behavior of the person behind a particular request.
Why Tor detection can change
Relay participation and IP assignments change over time. Providers update their datasets at different speeds, and an address can later be reassigned for unrelated use. This is why Tor status should be interpreted with a timestamp and supporting context.
Tor versus VPN and proxy
All three can cause a destination to see a different public IP, but the architectures differ. A VPN normally tunnels traffic to a chosen provider server, a proxy relays configured traffic, and Tor routes supported traffic through multiple relays before the exit point.
Tor is not the same as malicious activity
Tor is a privacy network used for many legitimate purposes. Security systems may choose to treat exit-node traffic differently because attribution is harder, but a Tor flag by itself is not evidence that a user performed malicious activity.
